Project Snapshot
Project Name: Nalco Company, Burlington, Ontario
Project Description: Heating system upgrade of the two office Buildings at the Burlington plant.
Focus: Reducing the energy consumption and Upgrading the old heating system boilers with new boilers.
Nalco Canada Company, a Fortune 500 company and a leading manufacturer of water treatment chemicals, embarked on phase 1 of an energy retrofit project. The focus of the project was to reduce the energy consumption and upgrade the heating systems of the two office buildings.
The existing heating system was designed based on one 2 Million BTUH boiler serving each of the office building. Following discussion with Nalco and an energy audit it was determined by Wesatyn engineers that a new heating plant had to be designed, keeping in mind the change in the usage within the two buildings.
The new design involved the replacement of one boiler with a new hi-efficiency boiler and retaining one of the old boilers as a 100% standby for limited operation. The old system had obsolete and non-functional controls. A new control system was designed and installed as a part of this retrofit.
The new heating system was designed to handle the heating requirements of the two office buildings with complete automation. The automation system was designed to control:
- Boiler operation with outdoor air reset
- Supply of heating to multiple zones
- Control valves
- Operating schedules
- Energy usage
- Logging critical trend data
The automation has a web interface for remote control and operation The new system and automation delivers savings of more than $ 60,000/year, with an ROI of just over two years.
